About the project
From small beginnings in May of 2007, when Squiz, with the help of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind, Wellington City Council and web access Audit company W3a, held a technology camp in which blind and vision impaired secondary school students were introduced to the JAWS for Windows screen reading software, it was quickly decided that an online-based, personalised system would prove the most inclusive.
Since then, the student group has expanded to a national cooperative under the title of the BLENNZ Tech Angels; and involvement in the project now encompasses representatives of the Ministry of Education, the Blind and Low Vision Education Network, secondary school teachers, Manukau City Council and tech savvy members of the blindness community, as well as those mentioned above.
