Question 6
Facilitator: I do I overcome the challenges I face in school today if I were the teacher?
Response: I think that some of the barriers are actually more systemic, so that’s where we all need to advocate for change. If there are students missing out it’s not working for teachers either so lets find something that works for everybody. The policies, the attitudes and the philosophies need to change.
Response: Part of learning is not only the internal learning for students but the external learning for communities, and I feel privileged to be here today amongst such as amazing group of people and have the ability to learn from you all today. And I think that the greater awareness that we can have in the community of all the things that we’re talking about here is really important to the advancement of all of the things that we’re talking about for students right across the disability sector. There are some amazing people here that have obviously got lots to offer, so lets get as much of it out there into the community as we possibly can for other people to hear about it, and get fired up about it, and enthusiastic about what’s going on, as well as the achievements of the kids and what they’re doing.
Response: I feel a bit sorry for teachers, they have so many things that the need to do and so little time, but I think one of the models we saw this morning where the guys were talking about their tech teams and how they were training their teachers was a really good model that most of us could take away. Because if you need something from your teacher you need to help your teacher be able to deliver that to you. And I think a lot of you guys do need something special from your teachers, and I would love to see a world were the students could help their teachers to achieve that. Because the teachers need help, they don’t know what to do.
Response: I think that I know teachers don’t have much time, but if they could provide one alternative to learning a piece of information they could reach so many more people and have their message out at a much higher level then they would’ve if they had used only one way. Rather then giving a text book to every student, allow them to decide if they want to do maybe a problem solving activity that relates to a practical application of that skill. Because the more ways you can provide to learn the more people you can reach.
Facilitator: It sounds to me there is also a need for a support network between teachers; one teacher can’t always do everything that’s necessary. Whereas is they can share some of the workload and share some of the artifacts that they produce for their classes then there is an opportunity for teachers to be more effective, cause they can use different teaching aids from other teachers.
